The eleventh hour

I recently went to one of my friends theatre rehearsals.
I drew them practising dancing with fans and tap dancing.
One part of the dance was that they were all in a circle with their fans, and rotated anticlockwise.
The fans lowered and lifted, and to ensure the girls knew where to lower and where to lift, they had to imagine being on a clock face - lower at 6pm and heights at 12.

So there is an 11th hour here, after the height of 12 and begins its transit into the lowest position.

Quick book cover brief

I chose Perfume as I have seen the film and read the book, the themes and imagery really touched me as they were so poignant. The emotions and senses run high and I wanted to try and convey this.

Perfume
I looked at Ophelia and her hair floating in the water. The serenity in her face as she rests in death.
Original black indian ink.

John Everett Millais Ophelia. I instantly thought of this image as she is bathed in liquid - as the main character does to his women to make his perfume. He soaks the bodies in oils.
The colours of the flowers that stand out also attracted me as thy relate to smell.

Edited with Curves for a darker colour, removed blotches, and added a purple hue to it.

I will review the placement of the ladies for the text box t fit in without masking their faces. I could make them elongated and faces more in the centre, with their bodies like smoke.
The flowing hair and angelic faces....
Jenny D Fine -  She draws a lot of characters using bold lines with an angular quality.

Flowing hair and flowing dress, splaying out as she swirls around. It gives the feeling of being underwater.
Conrad Roset -
Flowing ladies that echo Egon Schile.
Muses - flowing ink, delicate hands.

Hair as though its splayed across a pillow, delicate lines mimic the grain of wood.

oil paint, enamel, and shellac.
Flowing movements that recall the sea.

I chose 1984 as I had seen Brave New World in the theatre recently, and it had similar themes of futuristic medicine and excessive monitoring. I was inspired by the play and so chose this theme to look at.
There are a lot of films and books based on post apocalyptic or where the capitol takes over. Films come to mind such as The Matrix...
reading code and monitoring.

Inside the ship on The Matrix. He is in control of all the people plugged in and has to monitor all the activities and alter the levels.

a red filter over it.

I would alter the levels slightly to brighten the screens and darken the shadow.
I'm pleased with how this came out - I used my ink drawing and added texture with photoshop brushes and editing the ink splotches.

Quick brief

How Viral cat videos are warming the planet.
I thought of cats literally warming the planet up - by sitting on it and laying on it.
Then I looked at some Cat Videos to see the silly things they get up to, and based some drawings on these.
The top sketches I based on cats releasing the C02, In forms of gas and excrement.
The bottom show cats warming and playing with the planet.

A common prank was to ‘Bread’ cats, putting their face through a slice.
Grumpy Cat - a famous internet celebrity, is shown sitting on the
keyboard.

I chose to develop the cats playing with the planet.

As well as a few cats watching cat videos.

I chose to draw it in black and white using inks and ink pen, adding
texture with brushes.

I payed with some colour - a green to represent smelly gas.

I worked 10:30 to 12:15 on this piece, and I’m pleased with the way it turned out. On the website, they show a computer data base system, as the article is more about the figures of emissions, but I wanted to show the absurdity of how watching cat videos, or any search on the internet, is linked to emissions. I actually have never thought about the energy needed to power computers and search engines, I suppose because you’re only looking at your screen and everything is wireless nowadays.

What to Do in New England in October USA TODAY
Within the article, it mentions various things to do, including hot air ballooning, zip wire, wine tasting, moose watching and all sorts! I decided to try and combine them all in a composition.
The top, I looked at turning the grapes into hot air balloons.
The bottom - wine, balloons, moose and zip wire.

The centre image, I looked at drinking wine whilst listening to a jazz band, with hot air balloons over head.
Above, I decided to add a person in to put someone into the situation.

My final image - wine tasting. I added the bright foliage of autumn trees, and a moose looking longingly at the grapes. Someone zip wires above and hot air balloons pass over.
I feel fonder of the left hand composition and will look into editing it so it’s simply the grape vine and couple.
I added orange circle forms to the bottom right to symbolise the pumpkins and apple picking mentioned within the article.
I might alter the pose of the zip wire person as it looks a bit precarious.
I considered the moose being swapped for a jazz band, so another image may have to be drawn up!
I worked on this one quicker and i think it shows.

I think of Cinderella, an hour before she has to run away and her carriage begins to turn into a pumpkin and everything is going so well, but it must come to an end.
All good things must end, but they will come back to you ( cinderella had to run away but the prince found her later).
